Gem & Jam Festival 2017

  • Pima County Fairgrounds 11300 South Houghton Road Tucson, AZ, 85747 United States (map)

Exciting news from Tucson’s 11th Annual Gem and Jam Festival... The event is moving on from its former urban downtown venue to a desert location surrounded by nature. The new venue, Pima County Fairgrounds is a more expansive space with on site camping, RV hookups, boutique camping options, showers, and the late night events are now included in the ticket price. This fest has been dubbed the “Crown Jewel of the Southwest Festival Scene” by the Huffington Post, and we can't wait to discover why.

It looks to be a truly unique and unforgettable festival experience that brings together music, art, performance, gems, minerals and community like no other. The festival takes place every year during the Tucson Gem, Mineral, and Fossil showcase; so there will be plenty of interesting vendors and guests that overlap the music and arts communities. The camping options look great, and there are late night sets to keep the music going after the headliners finish each night.

Only a few miles from the Tucson airport, this festival is easily accessible for people coming in from out of town, and will probably feature a blend of campers, hotel visitors, and locals who want to sleep in their own bed each night. The crowds are expected to be big, and with a lineup like this, I'm sure people will be coming in from miles away to enjoy the experience.

If anyone is flying in like me, and planning to camp, get prepared for cold nights and warm days. In addition to all your camp gear, I recommend bringing a CamelBak for water, and gloves and hats for night time. You might also want to invest in some of those handwarmer packs for going to sleep. If you're ok sleeping in the cold, at least make sure you have a good sleeping bag and can wake up ready to party each day. Sunblock is also a must-have during the day, but remember to pick it up in Tucson, as you won't be able to fly with very much. Other than that, just make sure you've got your rock collection with you, as I'm sure campsite trading will be going on all weekend, and I'll see you there!
