Explosions in the Sky Send Us Through Waves Of Emotion

Close your eyes. The moments of open space and stars pass by you. You hear the soft melodic sounds of waves that surpass you to a state of calm. You are suspended in an "orchestral" moment until you a struck with a quick explosion of sound that grounds you back in your body and quickly roots you to the ground. This is the musical ride that Explosions in the Sky delivered at the Georgia Theatre in Athens last week.

The four-piece band from Texas claim they coined their name while watching the fireworks on the fourth of July, but an exploding firework is on a small scale to what this band delivers. It has been said that “Explosions” try to come up with an image or narrative when it comes to writing new music. Their latest album, The Wilderness, clearly builds on melodic sounds and spacey sonic climaxes that take you on a mental ride.

The band mapped out their 2017 North American tour playing a total of 20 shows, starting on April 6 with the first date in San Antonio, TX. As word has it, they are sticking within the United States for the most part but will try to hit Toronto on April 23 at the Rebel Sound Academy.

I was happy to experience The Wilderness at the Georgia Theatre. The venue underwent renovations in 2010 and 2011 and reopened with a completely new energy ready to encompass artists with a big punch. The night “Explosions” were there, they almost filled their capacity of ‎1,028 held within various levels of their facility with people driving from out of state to take in “Explosion’s” quietly masterful piece of work.

The album The Wilderness is the band’s sixth and has received an 8.0 on the review charts full of emotionally rich work. This band has previously sold out Radio City Music Hall.

Check them out on their 2017 tour and take in something that resonates your soul in a grand way.
