Over the years, several gastronomic terms have come to induce immediate eye-rolling and audible disgust by the masses: terms like, “artificial sweeteners," “saturated fat," or, the dreaded, “processed food." Yet, as consistent with most overused colloquial terms, few can relay the term’s actual definition. One startup wants to fix it. “Process This” has made it their mission to educate the public and redeem the misunderstood label of “processed food."
Based out of sunny West Palm Beach, Florida, “Process This” sets up grills and tents at music festivals, fostering conversation and community while serving free high-quality food. The group, founded by Valentina Ferreira, seeks to inform music lovers of the true definition of processed foods
“The true definition of ‘processed food’ is ‘any food that has gone through a process before it is consumed’, explains Ferreira. “In all reality, it is impossible to eat unprocessed food,” she says.
"Unless you go up to a cow and take a bite out of it, which is way gnarly - so if you do that, I would like to know more!”
Earlier this month, “Process This” posted up at Florida’s four-day Okeechobee Music Festival (vote for them to win Okee Hero or read our review of the festival); each morning passing out 600 Angus beef sliders, 300 all natural beef hot dogs, and 1000 slices of premium bacon. “We chose to advocate at music festivals because we found that the festival community is the most open to learning new things, and actually want to become a community after the festival,” explains Ferreira. “The love and truths shared are not a one-time thing, but have the opportunity to become a movement.”
The Okeechobee Music Fest was the group’s first trial. As of now, “Process This” plans to appear again at Okeechobee in 2018. They hope to continue to raise awareness among the music community of the benefits of sharing high-quality, innovative food and enlightening conversation – and to receive sponsorship for other festivals throughout the year. “Bonnaroo is the dream right now!” says Ferreira.
