Monstrous Talent Unleashed in New Remix EP
In 2015, Issac, DJ and producer hailing from Mexico released “The Monster in Your Head” on Fade Records. A monster of a tune in its own right, three separate DJ/producers have been hard at work re-imagining and reinventing its rhythms and essence. The resulting three tracks are sure to crack a smile and bob a few heads as all three offer variety ranging from dark, hard hitting bass, to more playful percussion and ambient melody.
Luke Hunter’s take is the longest in the collection. An ongoing and layering build throughout, its texture is fairly thin which creates clarity and makes the individual musical lines easy to follow as they are introduced to the mix. Echo laden's vocals promote the groove while simultaneously creating otherworldly landscapes.
Taking a more straightforward approach, Atapy’s contribution plays like a movie where if you don’t make it through long enough to gain the necessary context, you won’t get the movie. Its introduction is lengthy and keeps the listener on edge with its aggressive on top of the beat kick. Once the main beat enters, the track settles in and really bangs, hard. It’s dreamy vocals and washy top end provides a nice balance to counter the aggressive low-end drive.
Atlanta-based DJ and producer Frank Duke’s deep percussion knowledge and musical experience shine through with his melodious re-imagining of Issac’s track. Much lighter in its tone, by comparison, his rendition is bouncy and warm. The syncopation of its rhythms, the subtle harmonic context on which playful percussive melodies find their groove, make his effort stand out and provides a celebratory and downright uplifting change of pace bringing the EP to an end.
